Hearing Impaired Unit (HIU)

The Hearing Impaired Unit has been a part of The Mead Infant School for more than 20 years and exemplifies the school motto:

“Proud To Belong”

We promote a natural oral approach to teaching children with varying degrees of deafness.

Our aim is for each child to be fully included in the life of the school. They are first and foremost members of their class, receiving support as needed from the HIU where they make friends with other children who are deaf and thus develop their self-esteem.

The HIU provides a base for deaf children (and sometimes their hearing friends) to learn in small groups or have one to one sessions with the Teacher of the Deaf or Teaching Assistant.

The Team

The team includes a qualified, experienced Teacher of the Deaf, A Specialist Speech and Language Team, and trained Teaching Assistants assigned to support deaf children in class.

We also benefit from regular visits from:

  • An audiology technician
  • An education audiologist
  • Members from Cochlear Implant teams

We liaise closely with audiology clinics and other educational professionals so that we can fully understand the needs of each child.

In order to provide listening conditions:

  • all classrooms have soundfield systems are acoustically treated
  • there are twice daily checks of hearing equipment
  • radio aids are used as soon as appropriate

Learning at The Mead

All deaf children have Individual Educational Plans and have opportunities to develop their language and learn, with support, in their mainstream classes from specialist teaching.

Our aim is for each child to have the fullest access to the curriculum and school life by:

  • learning alongside their classmates
  • Providing in class support from a Teaching Assistant
  • Pre/post teaching of key language
  • Providing a wide range of visual resources
  • Small group and individual teaching in a quiet environment
  • On-going deaf awareness training for all staff
  • Careful monitoring of progress

Involving Families

We maintain close links with the families of our deaf children. A home/school book is written daily to share information. The Teacher of the Deaf is available to talk on the phone, by email or in person.

We organise coffee mornings/afternoon teas where the parents can meet each other and discuss a variety of deaf issues.
