Year One Curriculum

The title of our topic for the half term is ‘What do we see if we keep going up?’ This links well to the previous half term’s work but will see our learning soar beyond the clouds and into space! We’ll be learning a little about the planets but our main focus will be on Neil Armstrong and the Moon. Tim Peake’s current adventures are perfectly timed for us to talk about modern space exploration too.

In Geography we’ll be learning about the 7 continents and 5 oceans and the Science focus is on materials.

This term we will build on your child’s knowledge of number, including counting, ordering addition and subtraction, teaching them strategies to solve simple problems.   We also learn about money, time, shape and measure.

Your child will be taught to write for a variety of purposes, such as recounts, descriptions, imaginary stories and instructions.  We will be working on the basic structures of writing including finger spaces, capital letters, full stops, simple adjectives and simple conjunctions,?,!.  Your child will be encouraged to use their phonic knowledge when both reading and writing.  Books will provide an exciting stimulus for writing and reading skills will be reinforced during this time.  We look forward to providing the children with drama opportunities, where their imagination can be brought to life.

Your child will read in school individually every week.  It is necessary for your child to consolidate their reading skills at home as well.  Your comment and date in their yellow reading record books is very valuable to us.

Our science this half term is naming materials and understanding their properties. The children will have opportunities to investigate and apply their knowledge.

Pupils are able to experience a range of programmes and resources designed to develop keyboard skills, word processing skills and understanding of computing.  The activities are again linked to our topic and designed to develop their knowledge and understanding of technology available to them such as Learn Pads and Programmable toys.

We are fortunate to have a specialist music teacher at The Mead, Mrs Soddy.  All Year 1 children will work with her to develop their understanding of beat, rhythm, notation and singing and develop the skills they have learnt from Reception.

Art / DT

In art we will be learning about Vincent Van Gogh and through colour mixing and a range of different media, we’ll re-create ‘Starry Night’.  In DT we will be designing and making a new home for Beegu, a character in one of our key texts.

This is taught in themed blocks such as gymnastics, dance, team games and sports activities.  The programme is designed to develop co ordination, balance, flexibility and an understanding of the importance of exercise.  Year 1 children also benefit from the expertise of a specialist PE teacher, Mr Paddington.
